How to Apply Blush Based on Your Face Shape
Search #makeuptok on TikTok and you’ll instantly discover an infinite number of video tutorials in which creators reveal how they perfect a particular makeup look. What they often fail to mention, though, is that the result they get won’t look the same on you. Why? Because we all have different faces — one “size” does not fit all. From overall face shape to varying bone structures, tweaking your application to suit your unique features can really change the outcome.
More specifically, when it comes to achieving that ever-popular rosy glow for summer, tailoring your blush application to fit your individual features is key. “Knowing your face shape and the best blush application for it will help balance, soften and provide structure, creating a more youthful appearance,” Perricone MD’s Director of Education and Licensed Makeup Artist, Rosalba Martone, shares.
Cue our No Makeup Blush Balm. This buildable cream blush comes in an easy-to-use stick format that allows for precise application to make it easier to accomplish your desired look. Formulated with ultra-brightening Vitamin C Ester, smoothing ceramides and moisture-enhancing camellia flower seed oil, this blendable blush balm glides on effortlessly for a natural-looking color while visibly improving dullness and discoloration over time.
Now that you have step 1 (choosing your product) out of the way, it’s time to move on to step 2: strategically applying blush based on your face shape. Let’s get into it.
How to Apply Blush for Your Face Shape
As with everything, we leave the facts to the experts, so we tapped Rosalba to divulge her professional makeup tips. Below you’ll find exactly what you need to identify your face shape, how to apply your blush based on that shape and why that application is key.
Oval Face Shape
What: An oval-shaped face is longer than it is wide with a softly rounded chin.
How: Apply onto the apples of your cheeks, toward your cheekbones and temples.
Why: This helps to draw attention to the center of the face, creating a more balanced look that creates the illusion of a “shorter,” lifted face.
Long Face Shape
What: Also longer than it is wide, a long face shape features sharper features, including chin and jawline.
How: Apply onto the apples of your cheeks, toward your cheekbones and temples, then across the nose.
Why: This helps to draw the eye to the center of the face, as it does for the oval face shape, with the additional dusting across the bridge of the nose to further distract from the harsh angles for a softer look.
Heart Face Shape
What: Like a heart, a heart-shaped face is wider at the top (toward the temples) and narrower toward the, typically pointed, chin.
How: Apply in a “C” shape from your cheekbones to your temples.
Why: This helps to balance the upper and lower halves of your face so it appears more symmetrical.
Square Face Shape
What: Typically as long as it is wide, a square face can also be identified by its angular features and strong jawlines.
How: Apply onto the apples of your cheeks.
Why: This helps to soften the sharp angles of a square face to draw the eye away from these angles to promote a more balanced look.
Round Face Shape
What: Widest at the cheeks, a round face flaunts softer features and a soft jawline.
How: Apply onto your cheekbones toward your temples.
Why: This helps distract from the fullness in the cheek area, drawing the eyes outward to promote a more lifted, sculpted appearance.
