As the CBD craze grows, and the hemp-based ingredient continues to prove it’s the real deal, it’s important to recognize that CBD (short for cannabidiol) has become a major trend in the skincare industry.
Many brands are jumping on the hemp-infused bandwagon, adding the of-the-moment ingredient into anything and everything (hello, CBD nail polish). And because it’s not exactly a well-regulated industry yet, there’s a chance that what you’re buying isn’t quality CBD, or even CBD at all. So, how do you know you’re buying the best CBD skincare products? Well, you have to do a little homework. Fortunately, we’ve done it for you. Consider this your CBD skincare cheat sheet, and use it as your guide to buying the best CBD skincare products.
CBD comes in two forms: full spectrum and isolate
There are two main types of CBD: Full spectrum and CBD isolate. So, what’s the difference? And more importantly - which is better? Full spectrum means you’re getting CBD, along with other phytocannabinoids and natural compounds such as terpenes and waxes, also found in the hemp plant.
CBD isolate, on the other hand, is the more ideal choice because you know it contains only cannabidiol with no other ingredients - you’re getting 99 percent pure and potent CBD.
And unlike full spectrum CBD, with a CBD isolate, there’s zero chance that your product will have any traces of THC floating around in its formula. CBD isolates are also free of any impurities that can taint your skincare products, giving them a bad smell or color. Perricone MD uses pure CBD isolate powder in our new Cold Plasma Plus + CBD Advanced Serum Concentrate.
Not all hemp contains CBD
You’ve probably seen some skincare products that contain hemp seed oil or hemp butter. If they contain hemp, they must contain CBD, right? Despite what clever marketers want you to think, that’s not necessarily the case. Hemp seed oil is cold pressed from hemp seeds, and while it has some lovely skin-moisturizing benefits, hemp seeds contain very little CBD, or possibly none at all.
It’s important to check that the labels on so-called CBD skincare products list cannabidiol or CBD in the ingredient list, not hemp seed oil or butter.
How it’s extracted matters
Extraction is the process by which CBD is taken out of the cannabis plant. There are a few different ways to go about it. The ideal method is done with carbon dioxide (CO2) coupled with high pressure and low temperatures. It’s considered a clean method that’s more environmentally-friendly and safer than other methods. The CO2 effectively isolates CBD, while maintaining the purity and integrity of the hemp active ingredient.
Other extraction methods are less precise, effective, or may use chemical solvents that can leave a potentially toxic residue behind, tainting the purity of the CBD and potentially compromising your health.
The CBD isolate powder used by Perricone MD is extracted using the clean and safe CO2 method.
CO2 extraction is the most expensive method, so not all brands choose to go this route. As a result, the quality of the final product may suffer.
Know your numbers
One way to know whether or not you’re getting a high-quality CBD product is to look for the amount of cannabidiol in the product. If the product doesn’t specify, it may contain a very small percentage of CBD that won’t be very effective for your skin. The amount of CBD present in a product should be listed in milligrams (mgs). Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus + CBD Advanced Serum Concentrate includes 100 mg of CBD isolate, which is considered a hefty dose.
Go with a brand you can trust
Google CBD skincare and you’ll likely see pages and pages of brands you’ve never heard of. These up and coming skincare brands may be the real deal, but without a tried-and-trusted track record, there’s just no guarantee that you’re paying for a high-quality product. Perricone MD was one of the first reputable, trusted, and clinically-proven skincare brand to harness the power of CBD in a skincare product—first, in its CBX for Men line and now in Cold Plasma Plus+ CBD Advanced Serum Concentrate. Along with our signature science ingredients, Dr. Perricone has handpicked CBD for its laundry list of skin benefits, including calming, soothing, and protecting, but he also recognized that where the CBD is sourced, how it’s extracted, and the delivery system it’s placed into are what really make a top-notch, effective CBD skincare product.
Introducing Perricone MD’s newest CBD breakthrough: Cold Plasma Plus+ CBD Advanced Serum Concentrate
For a limited time, you can get CBD skincare benefits in the top performing, anti-aging Cold Plasma Plus+ Serum. The hemp-derived CBD in this product works with your skin’s own endocannabinoid system (a complex system that plays a role in keeping skin balanced and healthy) to soothe, calm, and nourish your complexion—a few of CBD’s most notable skincare benefits.
The addition of CBD into the Cold Plasma Plus+ formula makes it an ideal choice for those with sensitive skin who want to address the visible signs of aging: fine lines and wrinkles, dullness, enlarged pores, uneven texture and tone, enlarged pores, and loss of firmness and elasticity, all without any irritation.
Calming CBD compliments vitamin C ester, a super-charged, potent antioxidant that brightens and visibly smooths skin, and Omegas 3, 6, and 9, essential fatty acids that help to keep skin supple and radiant. The addition of CBD helps to minimize the appearance of redness and irritation. The serum, meant to be used day and night, has impressive clinical results: 100 percent of women showed an improvement in fine lines and wrinkles and 97 percent showed a reduction in pore size in just 28 days.
