Energy from the Inside Out, and the Outside In

Energy. It’s the driving force behind everything we do, and a powerful remedy for dull, tired-looking skin. Of course, the way in which we provide our bodies with energy is vastly different from how we deliver energy to our skin. Keeping up with a regular exercise routine and eating the right foods help produce energy from the inside out, while applying topical skincare helps energize the appearance of skin from the outside in. Curious about the steps you can take to energize both body and skin? Read on.

Boost Your Energy with Exercise

Wait, wait, wait. Exercise for more energy? Given how drained our bodies can feel after an intense workout, we get why this may be a little hard to wrap your head around at first. But believe it. Regular physical activity—whether it’s in the form of yoga, a walk around the block, or something more intense like a group fitness class—offers more than just weight-loss benefits or protecting against heart disease, diabetes, and other medical conditions (not that these benefits aren’t all reason enough to maintain an active lifestyle). Studies have also shown that participating in a regular exercise program helps increase energy levels and reduce fatigue, increasing the levels of energy-producing and mood-boosting neurotransmitters within the body such as dopamine and serotonin. Given that exercise also helps improve endurance and increase muscle strength, you’ll notice that your body will maintain higher energy levels throughout the day.

Eating for Energy

Well, you know what they say—you are what you eat. That’s why maintaining a healthy diet is key when it comes to helping boost energy levels and fight fatigue. But while you may have a solid understanding of what it means to eat healthy, do you know what foods should be on your shopping list if you’re trying to eat for energy? Allow us to offer some assistance in that department (no, neither sugar or caffeine make the cut…sorry). First and foremost, don’t let yourself go hungry. When your blood sugar gets too low, so do your energy levels, putting you at the bottom of an uphill battle before you’ve even gotten started. The same rule of thumb goes for water—don’t wait until you’re feeling the effects of dehydration to finally quench your thirst. Instead, regularly sip water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated and energy levels up. Speaking of never going hungry, we suggest making the following energy-boosting foods part of your regular diet:
    • Nuts, especially almonds. These crunchy little snacks contain high levels of magnesium, fiber, and protein, which help convert sugar to energy, maintain blood sugar levels, and keep you feeling full for hours.

    • Fresh fruit. The perfect combination of natural sugars, fiber, and other nutrients, fruit is a great choice when it comes to giving your energy levels a quick pick-me-up without the crash later.

    • Leafy greens. Reach for some iron-loaded spinach to avoid that mid-day slump. Considering that iron deficiency is a common cause of fatigue, making sure you have enough iron in your diet is key to keeping those energy levels up.

  • Salmon. Yep, salmon makes another one of our must-eat lists. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. You already know it’s packed with omega-3 fatty acids, but that’s not all—it’s also rich in vitamin B6, protein, niacin, and riboflavin, all of which play a role in converting food to energy.
While specific vitamins and minerals are important for converting nutrients into energy, they don’t directly fuel the body and provide it with energy. That’s where carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats enter the picture (stay away from unhealthy fats, though, as those can have the reverse effect and cause you to feel sluggish). Of course, supplements are also an easy, effective way to get that extra energy boost. Our Super Berry with Acai Supplement Powder provides instant energy, while our Health & Weight Management Supplements can have an impact as well (in addition to offering other benefits for both body and skin).
