When your skin looks dull, chances are it’s due to a low-grade inflammation on the cellular level that results in altered blood circulation and decreased energy production - the outward result being a loss of radiance.
As this inflammation affects the skin, classic signs of aging are manifested. These include wrinkling, sagging, discoloration, enlarged pores and the aforementioned lack of radiance. We long for the radiant complexion of our youth and try (unsuccessfully) to achieve this with a variety of cosmetics or potions that offer ‘hope (and not much else) in a jar.’
But there is good news. We know that after only three days on the anti-inflammatory diet, our skin looks significantly healthier, more radiant, and less wrinkled. And we know that topical anti-inflammatories (many of them from food-sourced antioxidants) provide many visible benefits.
Rule #1 - Change Your Diet
Follow the anti-inflammatory diet to create radiance and glow from the inside out:
- high-quality protein, like that found in fish, shellfish, poultry and tofu;
- low-glycemic carbohydrates including colorful fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains such as old-fashioned oatmeal, legumes such as beans and lentils;
- healthy fats, such as those found in cold water fish (especially wild Alaskan salmon, halibut, sardines, herring, anchovies, etc.), nuts, seeds, and extra virgin olive oil
- 6 - 8 glasses of pure spring water per day.
- Anti-oxidant rich beverages such as green tea
Rule # 2 - Skip the Sugar
Avoid sugary, starchy foods and beverages, which rob skin of its radiance and youthful contours.
Rule # 3 - Get your Beauty Sleep
Cellular repair takes place while we sleep resulting in smoother more radiant skin. When we are sleep-deprived, our skin takes on a pasty, puffy and more wrinkled appearance. The skin’s permeability also increases during sleep, so the benefits of topical antioxidants increases - giving new meaning to the term ‘beauty sleep.’
Avoid any activities that have bright lights shining in your face, such as watching TV or working on the computer, at least an hour before going to sleep. Bright lights suppress the secretion of melatonin, which is a natural sleep inducer.”
Nothing is worse for your complexion than sleep deprivation - which will also cause you to crave sugary starchy food
Rule # 4 - Hit the Gym
As a dermatologist, my first concern is beautiful skin, and exercise will help you to achieve just that. Studies have indicated that exercise benefits the skin in much the same way it improves bone and muscle quality. Without regular activity, bones become fragile and muscles atrophy. When the skin of athletes is examined under a microscope, the impact of their high fitness levels is clearly apparent. The skin is thicker and has more and healthier collagen, the fibers that give the skin its strength and flexibility. Also when we work up a good sweat we can cleanse the skin of environmental toxins. And these are not the only benefits. Regular exercise will increase circulation to the face, thus promoting a glowing complexion.
Rule # 5 - Proper Cleansing
Cleansing in the morning and before bedtime will keep the skin fresh and comfortable. Use warm and not hot water. The very best way to cleanse the skin is in the shower, as this will ensure that all of the cleanser is thoroughly rinsed from the skin. I like to pump the cleanser directly onto a small all-natural sea sponge. This lathers up well. Massage onto damp skin in gentle, circular motion. Rinse thoroughly and gently pat face dry.
If you have dull skin with large pores and puffiness choose a cleanser with alpha lipoic acid and DMAE, like Nutritive Cleanser. These nutrients will not just help skin feel thoroughly refreshed and clean; they will reveal a brighter, smoother surface, contributing to a radiant look to the skin. Alpha lipoic acid will do a wonderful job shrinking pores that may have become enlarged from overactive oil glands. DMAE redefines skin’s texture by improving the appearance of overall tone.
Cleansing skin thoroughly is the ideal way to begin an effective anti-aging skin regimen. By eliminating surface debris, dead skin cells and makeup, skin feels younger and looks positively glowing. Treat your skin to cleansers that are non-drying and gentle, yet possess the ability to thoroughly cleanse, thereby properly preparing the skin for treatment and moisturizing.
Rule # 6 - Learn to choose the right topicals
Many of the topical treatments that I have formulated contain the antioxidant alpha lipoic acid. There are many, many reasons why I am so enamoured with what is often referred to as “the universal antioxidant,” or “the metabolic antioxidant.
Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is unique as an antioxidant because it is both fat and water-soluble. This means that it is able to protect all portions of the cell.
Its anti-inflammatory effects reduce redness and blotchiness, resulting in an evening out of skin tone often making foundation unnecessary. ALA will shrink pore size and impart a healthy radiance to the skin. A sin treatment with ALA, such as Advanced Face Firming Activator, is excellent at decreasing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
When it comes to radiance, ALA’s capacity to regulate production of nitric oxide, which controls blood flow to the skin, transforms the complexion from dull, pasty, and pale to vibrant and glowing.
I have also created a light foundation to let your natural radiance shine through. No Foundation Foundation is a unique, original and all-new formula. It provides many of the benefits of a traditional foundation without its heavy, matte finish, which emphasizes even the tiniest skin imperfections. Due to its translucency, this lightweight and elegant formula contains a non-irritating, non-chemical sun screen that protects skin from the age-accelerating rays of the sun.
Formulated with proprietary, patented antioxidants, No Foundation Foundation delivers superior anti-aging benefits to diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, skin discolorations and loss of firmness.
Specially treated pigments, blended with light diffusing mica, instantly soften the look of lines, wrinkles and pores. This results in a flawless dewy finish for skin that looks naturally smooth, radiant and beautiful.
Incorporating these secrets into your daily routine will improve your skin and keep it radiant and beautiful from the inside out for years to come.
