The Brain-Beauty Connection

At the end of the nerve is a bud that holds a reservoir of neural chemicals including acetylcholine. The nerves do not actually touch the muscle to make it jump into action. Instead, the signal stops a short distance away at a place known as the "neuromuscular junction," just before contact. At this junction, the powerful neurotransmitter acetylcholine is released from the bulb and locks onto special receptors on the muscle, causing the muscle to contract.
