DMAE Unlocking the Secret to the Brain Beauty Connection

Dr. Perricone discusses the ultimate firming ingredient, DMAE, plus 4 ways to ensure you're getting enough of this multitasking nutrient.

Understanding the Brain - Beauty Connection is one of the key secrets in maintaining a youthful appearance and an agile mind as we age.

The Brain-Beauty Connection

Before we are born, when we are in an embryonic state, the layer of cells that eventually develops into the skin are also responsible for making brain cells. This Brain-Beauty Connection means that what is therapeutic for the brain is also therapeutic for the skin. Conversely, what is beneficial to the skin is also important to the brain. And it doesn't stop there. Each of the highly targeted foods and nutrients that I recommend for the skin, will also protect the cardiovascular system, build muscle, strengthen bone, decrease body fat, enhance athletic performance, improve libido and restore that all important joie de vivre; that sense of well-being, happiness and optimism so necessary for living life to its fullest.

DMAE, a nutrient near and dear to my heart (and brain and skin, as well) or dimethylaminoethenol, is a naturally occurring substance with significant anti-inflammatory, anti-aging properties. DMAE is found in sardines and anchovies, and small amounts of it are also produced naturally in the human brain. DMAE can also be taken as a nutritional supplement and applied topically to the skin. All three methods work synergistically for optimum effect.

DMAE and Diet

Let's start with diet. Only one food has the reputation from time immemorial of being a "brain food." That food is fish, especially fish that is high in DMAE. DMAE is known as a cognitive enhancer. A diet high in DMAE will enable you to think more clearly, have an improved memory, and a much greater problem solving ability. DMAE is a building block of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Like other neurotransmitters acetylcholine allows one nerve to communicate with another or for a nerve to communicate with a muscle. Studies have also shown that DMAE acts as an antioxidant by stabilizing cell membranes, protecting them from free radical damage. By raising levels of DMAE in our bodies, we can think more clearly and have greater muscle tone in both face and body.

DMAE and Your Skin

Numerous studies have shown that topical application of DMAE increases the appearance of firmness, tone and lift to the skin. DMAE also improves the appearance of skin elasticity and luminosity, helping to decrease the look of lines and wrinkles while brightening skin and evening out imperfections.

Many scientists and researchers in the field of dermatology are studying this remarkable nutrient, and their exciting findings validate what I have known for decades: DMAE has a unique, important role as a safe and effective strategy to help delay or reverse the appearance of aging skin.

DMAE and Muscle Tone

Once you decide to move any muscle in your body, whether to type on the computer or smile, a signal comes from the brain and travels along a nerve until it approaches the appropriate muscle that will do the actual job. At the end of the nerve is a bud that holds a reservoir of neural chemicals including acetylcholine. The nerves do not actually touch the muscle to make it jump into action. Instead, the signal stops a short distance away at a place known as the "neuromuscular junction," just before contact. At this junction, the powerful neurotransmitter acetylcholine is released from the bulb and locks onto special receptors on the muscle, causing the muscle to contract.

Increasing Muscle Tone with DMAE

As we age, our levels of acetylcholine decline, resulting in reduced muscle tone. Instead of staying short and tight, the muscles become elongated and relaxed, resulting in a sagging face and body. The way to improve muscle tone is to increase acetylcholine levels, and one of the best ways to do this is by introducing additional DMAE into your system.

There are four ways to do this, and they work synergistically to provide optimum levels of DMAE in the body:
1. Eat fish, the only significant dietary source of DMAE.
2. Take DMAE in the form of a nutritional supplement.
3. Apply a high potency, rapidly penetrating DMAE topical lotion to the skin on the face and body.
4. Keep the muscles toned with exercise.
